’The Butcher’s Wife’ is a charming and heartfelt story of a young clairvoyant woman (Demi Moore), who is transplanted from the countryside to the Big Apple as she marries a Greenwich Village butcher. There her life changes and quickly her psychic capabilities are questioned. Eventually she meets psychiatrist Dr. Tremor (Jeff Daniels) who tries to study her powers – or uncover the fraud – and finds out that he could be the man of her dreams.
Paramount Home Video is giving us ’The Butcher’s Wife’ in an anamorphic widescreen presentation on this DVD in a transfer that is clean and clear. No defects are evident in the presentation and the print is mostly free of defects and speckles. Colors are faithfully rendered and appear very lively. Blacks are deep and solid without breaking up, giving the image good contrast and depth. The compression is free of artifacts, leaving all the definition of the transfer fully intact.
’The Butcher’s Wife’ comes with a 5.1 channel Dolby Digital audio track, as well as a Dolby surround version and a French Stereo track. The audio is well-balanced and natural. Surround usage is good, though not overly aggressive, just right to underscore the film itself. Especially the music benefits from the wide sound field, but also sound effects are nicely and subtly placed in the surround channels. Dialogues are clear and always distinguishable, never drowned out by the music or effects. The frequency response if the audio is good with nice bass response and clear high ends that are free of distortion and sibilance.
