Dragon’s Lair 3D reunited Don Bluth and Rick Dyer
Everyone who enjoyed Dragon’s Lair over all these years will be pleased to hear that after 20 years, legendary animator Don Bluth and video game
pioneer Rick Dyer announced last week at the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) trade show in Los Angeles that they will be collaborating again for the first time since the ground-breaking arcade game was released in 1983 to create Dragon’s Lair 3D, published by Blue Byte Software, Inc. of Austin, TX.
Bluth and Dyer promised that Dragon’s Lair 3D, a real-time action/adventure
game that features new characters from Bluth and unique game design
from Dyer. The two also worked together 14 years ago on the coin-op smash Space Ace, which like the original Dragon’s Lair, enjoys strong sales today on DVD and CD-ROM platforms, selling more than 1,000,000 units combined. The DVD and CD versions are currently published by Digital Leisure Inc.
With Dragon’s Lair 3D being designed currently for PC and Macintosh formats for a Christmas 2000 release but with a console version under consideration, Blue Byte CEO Thomas Hertzler said he was proud that his company is managing work on a game that had such strong roots in the video game history. Hertzler said dramatic reaction to the announcement at the E3 show was a positive foreshadowing of future success.
