Tribute to Jimi Hendrix to hit DVD the “Right” way
LOS ANGELES — Feb. 10, 1999 — Pioneer and The Right
Stuff label will issue the DVD and VHS versions and the CD soundtrack to the
upcoming
D.A. Pennebaker film “Searching for Jimi Hendrix, “” on April 20.
The documentary feature, set to debut on Bravo Feb. 12, chronicles the
making of the CD and illustrates Hendrix’s tremendous influence on a
generation of artists representing a wide
variety of genres. The film celebrates both his innovations in music and his
talents as a composer.
Pennebaker, the director of such classic films as “Don’t Look Back,“”
featuring Bob Dylan, and “Ziggy Stardust,“” featuring David Bowie, captures
intimate performances and candid
interviews with the 11 artists who pay tribute to Hendrix on the CD. The
film travels from the soundstage with film composer Mark Isham to the
recording studio with rapper Chuck D
(Public Enemy), to the Manhattan loft of Laurie Anderson to Los Lobos“
Hollywood rehearsal space.
The artists, including Charlie Musselwhite, Cassandra Wilson, Neville Staple
and Sheena Staple (of The Specials), The Blind Boys of Alabama, Roseanne
Cash, Los Illegals and Taylor
Dayne, offer unique and personal interpretations of such Hendrix classics as
“Are You Experienced,”“ “Manic Depression,”“ “Driftin”,“” “Little
Wing,“” “Up From the Skies“” and
“Angel.“”
The soundtrack, produced by renowned Hendrix producer Alan Douglas, features
stunning performances and new arrangements of Hendrix’s well-known tunes.
Charlie Musselwhite offers up a poignant, bluesy version of “Hear My Train
A Coming,“” while Isham directs a small orchestra on his instrumental
rendering of “Stone Free.“” Chuck D’s
rap interpretation of “Freedom (At the Edge of an Answer)“” gives the track
a sense of renewed urban vitality, while Neville Staple and his daughter
Sheena give “Up From the Skies“”
an uplifting reggae-flavored nod.
The DVD, VHS and CD packages will be released simultaneously on April 20.
The CD will retail for $16.98, while the DVD, featuring 5.1 Surround Sound,
will be available for
$24.98, with the VHS release priced at $14.98.
