And another one… DVD explodes over Christmas
Number One On Santa’s List: DVD Titles; Top Selling
DVD Video Titles Are Off the Charts
LOS ANGELES, Dec. 31 — Underscoring experts“ predictions, DVD Video was a favorite among holiday
shoppers. Total DVD Video discs sales for the five week holiday shopping period was nearly three million units (2,933,333
discs) according to VideoScan which reports sales figures from 75 percent of the retail market. This figure is almost twice what
sold through to consumers in all of 1997. With hardware unit sales equally strong, DVD Video is the fastest growing new
packaged media format in history.
With many new releases on the top list, the number one seller was New Line Home Video’s new release of “Blade”“. In its
second week of release, ”Lethal Weapon 4”“ from Warner Home Video stayed on top as consumers” second favorite disc.
Rounding out the top three is “The Negotiator” also from Warner Home Video.
The James Bond classic “Tomorrow Never Dies“” from MGM Home Entertainment tops the list as the best selling DVD of
1998. Columbia TriStar Home Video holds the next top two spots for the year with megahits Godzilla and Air Force One,
number two and three respectively. All this is according to charts released today from the DVD Video Group and VideoScan.
”These consumer purchases ratify our belief in and the reality that open DVD is and will continue to be the future of
pre-recorded home entertainment,“” said Paul Culberg, president, DVD Video Group and executive vice president, Columbia
TriStar Home Video.
The charts are based on sales data collected by VideoScan from retail locations nationwide, including Best Buy, Blockbuster,
Circuit City, Musicland, Tower Records and more, but does not include small specialty stores and mass merchants such as
Wal-Mart and K-Mart. The list also can be found on the DVD Video Group’s web site.
Since its inception in 1993, VideoScan has been providing timely video sales information and charting capabilities for major
studios as well as home video divisions specializing in non-theatrical areas of interest. VideoScan’s computerized point-of-sale
tracking system currently collects data from more than 16,000 retail locations. VideoScan utilizes the same technology for its
home video and DVD services, that its sister company, SoundScan, presently uses to compile music industry charts and date.
The DVD Video Group is a Los Angeles-based, industry-funded nonprofit corporation that exists expressly to promote
