Columbia TriStar Home Video’s release of “Limbo” features a good looking transfer in a 1.85:1 widescreen aspect ratio that is enhanced for 16×9 TVs. The transfer is very natural looking, faithfully preserving the movie’s colors and rendering fleshtones very naturally. Slight edge over-enhancement is evident throughout the movie, creating edges that look a bit too harsh.
Although over-enhanced transfers are oftentimes prone to ringing compression artifacts, Columbia’s presentation is absolutely free of any sorts of artifact, making this a highly detailed presentation of the film, with a high level of detail.

The disc contains a 5.1 channel Dolby Digital soundtrack, as well as a Dolby surround presentations. Both mixes are very well balanced, but the 5.1 mix is noticeably more expansive with an added sense of “air”. The release also contains a very good commentary track by director John Sayles, covering many of the issues that came up in the day to day operations of the movie’s production, like distracting helicopters landing right next to the shooting locations. An isolated soundtrack in a Dolby Digital surround presentation.

“Limbo” is a thriller that is as chilling as the Alaskan wilderness it plays in. This DVD is great incarnation, bringing out the best of the movie, thanks to Columbia’s meticulous presentation.
