Star Wars

That’s really all the headline you need. Since DVD’s inception in 1997 there have been several huge gaps in film libraries that have filled in over the years; The Godfather, Indiana Jones etc. Today, finally, Lucasfilm and Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment revealed that the single most requested DVDs of all time will be coming to DVD in September. Star Wars, The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi finally join the party.

Now, as with all good news comes the Universe balancing bad news – and its just a big. As has been speculated for years the DVDs will not contain the original films, but the 1997 Special Editions with inserted scenes and computer generated effects. This is bad enough on VHS, but on a format capable of seamless branching it is deplorable.

As to the specifics, all three films will be presented in anamorphic widescreen with new Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround EX. Like the Indy trilogy, the discs will come packages exclusively in a four disc set containing the films and a bonus disc of supplementary material including the a new feature-length documentary with never-before-seen footage from the making of all three films.

The set will arrive on September 21st. Suggested retail price and more specific details will follow in the weeks to come. Nub nub.
