More news on animated Batman DVDs
Warner Brothers Home Video has been hinting for some time
that they were about start putting the animated adventures of Batman on
DVD. The long running “Batman: The Animated Series” has not only
produced several years of episodes, but several spin-off series and
theatrical and direct-to-video movies. Five new DVDs are coming from
Warner based on the award winning show. Batman & Mr. Freeze:
Subzero, The Batman/Superman Movie, Batman Beyond: Return
of the Joker (original cut), Batman: The Animated Series – The
Legend Begins, and Justice League are all coming in April.
“Batman & Mr. Freeze: Subzero” explodes into animated action when the
villainous Mr. Freeze kidnaps Batgirl. Now, racing the clock, Batman and
Robin face off against Mr. Freeze in the iciest showdown of the century.
The DVD comes with the film as well as the “Hunt for Mr. Freeze”
game, an original music montage, a featurette on
how to draw Batman, an introduction by producer Bruce Timm
and a trailer.
“The Batman/Superman Movie” begins when the Joker elicits the help of
Lex Luthor in a new fiendish scheme. Only the combined superpowers of
Batman and Superman can save Metropolis. Will the Man of Steel and the
Caped Crusader be able to foil the plot of this diabolical duo? Not if
the superheroes’ alter egos clash as they vie for the attention of the
self-reliant Lois.
The disc will contain similar features to “Subzero” including The
Joker’s Challenge game, introduction by Bruce Timm,
original music montage and how to draw Batman featurette.
The most controversial film of the lot comes in the form of “Batman
Beyond: Return of the Joker”. Originally dubbed far to violent by Warner
Brothers, the direct-to-video movie arrived in stores last year in a
severely edited form. The original version has never been released to
the public until now. The greatest villain of all comes out of the past
to threaten Batman, Bruce Wayne and all of Gotham City in Batman Beyond:
Return of the Joker, the first feature-length Batman Beyond movie. The
sleeker, deadlier and seemingly immortal Clown Prince of Crime is back
with his own unique brand of havoc and mayhem. While trying to uncover
the Joker’s secrets, the new Batman, Terry McGinnis, discovers the
greatest mystery in the life of the original Caped Crusader: What
happened the night he fought the Joker for the last time. When Bruce
Wayne is almost killed in one of the Joker’s latest attacks, Batman vows
to avenge his mentor and put the Joker to rest forever.
Extra features on this disc are unknown, but may include several
features from the previously released DVD.
“Batman: The Animated Series – The Legend Begins” goes back to the
beginning of the franchise with five episodes of the original television
series which premiered in 1992. Many fans of the show will be relieved
to hear that the episodes are being released on disc in order as opposed
to a “best-of” format which is a common practice at Warner Brothers.
The same features and a couple of extra ones appear on this disc
including how to draw Batman, Life on the Edge Game, animation
tests, and introduction by Bruce Timm, and trailers.
Finally comes the newest entry to the series, “Justice League”. When
global catastrophe strikes, sometimes the job is too big for a single
hero. This is when the world’s greatest super heroes answer the call to
join the Justice League. Members of the Justice League must learn to
work together as a team to overcome a dangerous array of interstellar
invaders and world-conquering megalomaniacs.
