Goodtimes Home Video presents “Psycho III” on this DVD in a 1.85:1 widescreen version. Although not 16×9 enhanced, the transfer is very good, without notable film artifacts. A few scenes exhibit some noise and film grain but for the most part, the transfer is stable and clean. It contains a high level of detail, reproducing the film’s moody atmosphere nicely. Blacks are deep and solid, and highlights are generally warm. The compression is very good. Only in a few scenes where film grain is evident, the slightest pixelation artifacts are noticeable upon very close examination, but for the rest of the film, there are no compression artifacts visible at all, giving the movie a very pleasing and sharp appearance.
“Psycho III” comes with an English Dolby surround track that is well produced. It is never aggressive, but makes good use of the surrounds for ambient effects, heightening the movie’s atmosphere. Subtitles in English, French and Spanish are supplied.
While “Psycho III” can’t hold up with Hitchcock’s original masterpiece, it is a good – albeit highly predictable – entry. Especially Anthony Perkins’ manic play and the atmospheric photography make this film subtler and more interesting than it may seem at first.
