Warner’s release of the Brian DePalma comedy “The Bonfire Of The Vanities” contains a 16×9 enhanced widescreen version of the movie as well as a pan & scan presentation that is slightly cropped on the sides. The transfers are very clean and stable without notable film noise or grain. The compression on this disc exhibits some slight ringing and pixelation artifacts but is never truly distracting. Color reproduction is generally good with a good color delineation and strong hues that never bleed. Blacks are deep and solid while highlights are strong, creating a balanced look throughout.
The release contains Dolby Stereo soundtracks in English and French. The language tracks sounds balanced and Dave Grusin’s music score is prominently featured in the mix, without ever drowning out dialogues or ambient sound effects however. The disc also contains subtitles in English and French language.
“The Bonfire Of The Vanities” is an entertaining comedy, although not nearly as funny as you would expect from such a high caliber cast. Nonetheless, the film delivers 2 hours of solid entertainment filled with pompous greed, lust, vanity and some poignantly delivered lines. Interestingly there are no extras on this disc to be found at all, not even biographies or a trailer.
