Since the Macrovision copy protection is part of the DVD specifications, it is rather easy for the company to convince partners to utilize the safety net it offers. It is designed to prevent unauthorized copying of DVD content to VCRs without impacting the original picture quality and so far an estimated 75% of all DVD releases have made use of the protection technology, accounting for approximately 20 million discs in total.
