“Godzilla” sweeps the country…
…and not only the new summer blockbuster from Sony Pictures that open nationwide today. Have you seen it? Even though I did not expect much other than popcorn entertainment, I was still slightly disappointed by the movie. While delivering some visceral scenes and great stomping action, some of the computer generated effects were of pretty poor quality with discoloration, wrong lighting and contrasts that did not match the actual live action footage. It also made me wonder once again why everything seems to be running in slow motion once a CGI creature enters the screen. Even debris is falling to the ground at half the speed you’d originally expect it. No good! The fact that the creature itself has been degradet to a plain lizard with the looks of “Alien” and the soundeffects of “Jurassic Park” doesn’t make things better. Gone are all the features we liked about the original “King Of The Monsters”. As a pure entertainment movie however, the film definitely delivers and will no doubt appeal to a big audience. I will definitely watch it again, once it’s available on DVD. There’s another Godzilla movement going on however, and this on is on DVD. Simitar has just recently released five of the original Toho Godzilla movies and in no time these titles have stormed retail. Predicting the wake of “Godzilla”“s marketing impact, Simitar began negotiating for the five Godzilla titles last October already, timing the releases of the discs perfectly with the new movies theatrical release. At this point Simitar have reportedly shipped over 700,000 copies of the movies, making it Simitar’s best-selling discs and videos. According to VideoScan, for the week ending May 10, the DVD ranked No. 21 (between “Apollo 13”“ and ”The English Patient”“), and the video ranked No. 33 (in front of “Pretty Woman”’).
