If Garry Marshall directed every movie, then there would be no sad endings. "The Other Sister" is Marshall's examination of the relationship between two individuals who are mentally challenged. The film is poignant and touching at times, but for the most part, it is overblown and unrealistic. Giovanni Ribisi is convincing as the shy and sweet Daniel, but Juliette Lewis never seems to grasp the role of Carla. Carla struggles with her domineering mom, played by Diane Keaton. The tone of the film is uneven and it is never clear how we are supposed to feel about Mom.
The DVD of "The Other Sister" is the standard Buena Vista fare, although there are a few extras on the disc. The film is letterboxed at 2.35:1 and is not anamorphic. The film’s framing is accurate and the source print is free of defects, producing a clear picture, but with some overly dark scenes. The film was shot by Dante Spinotti and he has given the film a very nice look which can be fully appreciated on this DVD.
The Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtrack is active throughout the film, giving more surround action than the typical comedy. The DVD includes a theatrical trailer, letterboxed at 1.85:1. There are also two music videos, featuring The Pretenders and Savage Garden. |
