West Side Story gets the Special Edition treatment

2003 is looking to be a year of great re-releases. Now that a great majority of the classics have made it to DVD, the studios have a chance to revisit some of their earlier releases with a little more care. Next up on the list is the Robert Wise musical nod to Shakespeare West Side Story coming as a two disc set from MGM Home Entertainment.

Moving the stage from fair Verona to not so fair Manhattan, West Side Story tells the tale of star-crossed lovers Tony and Maria caught in the height of the turf wars between the Jets and the Sharks.

How many extra features are left on this DVD? Enough for you and you? And one left for me? Well, there are plenty more extras than on the previous release of the film. Starting off with “West Side Memories” a full documentary and also including storyboards, archive footage, the restored film intermission music and printed materials included in the set including a scrapbook, the working script and a lobby brochure. The film itself will be presented in Dolby Digital 5.1 and anamorphic widescreen and can be watched with or without the intermission.

The set is set to arrive on April 1st with a suggested retail price of $39.95.
