After receiving critical acclaim, despite a limited theatrical engagement. Universal Home Video will be releasing the John Malkovich, Willem Dafoe psuedo-historical tale Shadow of the Vampire to DVD this May.

Based loosely on the troubled production of the classic 1922 German film “Nosferatu”, “Shadow of the Vampire” follows director F.W. Murnau in his obsessive quest for perfection in his filming. Murnau feels the only way to convincingly tell the tale of his vampire film is to cast an actual vampire in the lead. His commitment leads him to the elusive Max Schreck. Initially Murnau is able to convince his cast and crew that their costar is simply a method actor, deeply committed to his role. But eventually, when crew members start dying off, suspicions start to brew about the bizarre behavior of Schreck.

Although not a full-blown special edition, “Shadow” boasts a few treats for fans of the film. Presented in anamorphic widescreen, the film will contain a Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtrack in English and French. Highlighting the supplements are an Audio Commentary, Featurette and Interviews with the cast and crew. Additional features include a Photo Gallery, Production Notes, a Theatrical Trailer, and Cast and Crew Bios.

Joining a flood of other titles coming out on May 29th, “Shadow of the Vampire” has a suggested retail price of $26.98. After a relatively low box office draw, this film may very well find new life on DVD.
